Equipment for Food Processing

Experts notice, the Russian technological base will remain weak at least till 2030-2035 and Russian food-processing enterprises will continue to import tech equipment.

  • In Russia are 37.392 Russian food- and 6.490 beverage processing enterprises (2018)
  • Every year opens 50-100 new food manufacturers
  • On average 70% of their equipment is imported (2020)
  • Only 7% of Russian enterprises want to purchase the local equipment due to low technological base
  • The total market size of food processing machinery in Russia is ca. €1,5 billion (the global market size of food processing equipment was valued at €52 billion in 2019)
  • The total production volume in Russian food industry is ca €80 billion (2018).

Russian government implemented an “Import Substitution Policy” until 2030 in order to stimulate development of domestic production and minimize import dependence on Western Europe (this happened after European sanctions due to annexation of Crimea to Russia).

Should it affect the import volume of industrial equipment to Russia? Yes. They said, that 62% of equipment for food production should be produced in Russia by 2030.

Did this affect? Nope. The import volume of industrial equipment to Russia even rose because agro-/food-industry is developing in Russia. For example, export of food processing machinery from Germany in 2019 showed double-digit growth rate. Unfortunately, in Russia is still lack of knowledge and experience about development of technological products.

In some companies almost al food is produced on the foreign equipment. The highest level of imported equipment are in (2019):

  • meat and poultry industry (94.0%)
  • sugar industry (81.0%)
  • filling, packaging and weighing (79.0 %)
  • dairy industry (70.0%).

Import volumes remain stable even during the current economically unstable situation. The Ruble (Russian currency, RUB) was weaken with 30% in 2020:

  • in 2018: 1 Euro = ca 60 Roubles
  • in 2020: 1 Euro = ca 90 Roubles
Imported equipment to Russia gets really expensive and the Russian producers don’t have much government support during the COVID times. For example, the price of equipment for the production of tea and coffee is 2.64 times higher than it could be by production of domestic equipment.

Hundreds of European companies are already exporting to Russia, just a few of them:

Anton ohlert, Dana — technology, Anneliese, Ave technologies, Ams ferrari, Anima/assofoodtec, Andritz, Boema, Confitec, Heberhardt food press systems,

Egli, Ezma, Fibosa, Haensel processing gmbh, Ipco sweden, Lima, Minerva, Omega group, Murzan, Pentair sudmo, Revent, Spraying systems,

Steriflow, Stocco impianti, Omet foodtech, Tewes rus, Tomra foodtummers machinebouw and many others.

Probably the largest exporters to Russia are: Wynveen International, Winkler und Dünnebier Süßwarenmaschinen GmbH, Nivoba, Kraft Foods Deutschland Services, Haarslev Industries, Franz Haas Waffelmaschinen GmbH.

Indications of the wrong approach of Russian market for European producers are is the long export story to Russia but insufficient sales results. In this video (right) are panted 3 main mistakes of European exporters to Russia.

Russian companies are 100% loyal to European products. Your references of well-known costumers, large project realizations, quality certificates immediately remove all barriers and doubts by the Russian buyers.

Many Russian companies have problems with personnel due to low level of education and lack of training about modern technologies. People don’t receive this knowledge in the schools and universities. Informative support of the European producers is needed.
Distributor’s market is very saturated and highly competitive. The number of regional dealers of your distributor is very important for successful business.

The largest Russian trade fair for equipment, technologies, raw materials and ingredients for the food processing industry is AGROPRODMASH. This is the only place where European producers can meet potential customers from all parts of Russia and countries in neighborhood, only in 4 days.

In this video (left) is a short overview of this trade fair in 2019. New video presentations about different facets of export to Russia come out every month on the YouTube channelAnswers if you do business in Russia. You can subscribe for the channel and follow when something new is coming.
